The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) invited five teams to compete in a two-part, 21-week microgrid controller competition. NREL evaluated each microgrid controller's performance in controller hardware-in-the-loop, power hardware-in-the-loop, and cyber physical testbeds. They based their decision on how well the controllers responded to foreseen and unforeseen events.
